As you can see in one of the shirts -- America Makes, formerly the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute (NAMII), is a creative place. The t-shirt reads: America Makes: 3D Printing Playground.
Each visit, each stop, has its own energy and enthusiasm -- thanks to the people and passion that this burgeoning, perhaps exploding, industry has within it. And the America Makes team has to register pretty high up on the "3D Richter Scale" for positive energy and intensity. Before I got there, this amazing team created gifts for me! I was completely overwhelmed -- by the kindness and generosity, which you can see in all these photos and more to come.
The day before I was in Toledo for the SSOE Group meetup (and there’s another post coming on them, don’t worry) where Mark LaBell, Jr., Technical Leader at SSOE, and I talked about exactly what these smart America Makes interns represent for our nation – the new face of talent that is agile, lean, and adept at changing between software packages, at thinking out of the box as the saying goes. Printing their own box is more accurate. A new face for manufacturing and a mindset that pervades 3D printing – a “what’s next and I can do it mindset” that is increasingly required to get hired today. That kind of thinking is not limited to young people, by the way. Mark has some awesome thoughts on talent that I’ll share in a future post.
Thanks to America Makes for hosting me for the day and for showing me what a great playground they are running and sharing with the nation at large. Go visit Youngstown Ohio and see the future of manufacturing, the future of creativity and design.
Hats off to Aadam Soorma from Agency of Trillions (a new kind of agency, for sure) for helping to arrange all the details of my visit to America Makes.
